Rilke, Tolstoy, and travel...
your house is just
this side of great distances
this side of great distances

You'll not only see my blog as I intend it to be viewed. You and your computer will both be very happy. Firefox is more secure against viruses and hackers as well as less buggy than Explorer.Someone who wants to run Windows on servers should first be made to show what they know about servers that Google, Yahoo and Amazon don't know.
Speaking of explorers, I've been wanting to post one of my favorite poems about travel.
Entering
Whoever you are: step out in the evening
from your room where all is known to you;
your house is just this side of great distances:
whoever you are.
With your eyes which, exhausted,
barely free themselves from the worn threshold,
you raise up, slowly, a black tree
and place it against the sky: slender, alone.
And you've made the world. And it is vast
and like a word which ripens still in silence.
And as your will begins to grasp its meaning,
your eyes release it gently.
Whoever you are: step out in the evening
from your room where all is known to you;
your house is just this side of great distances:
whoever you are.
With your eyes which, exhausted,
barely free themselves from the worn threshold,
you raise up, slowly, a black tree
and place it against the sky: slender, alone.
And you've made the world. And it is vast
and like a word which ripens still in silence.
And as your will begins to grasp its meaning,
your eyes release it gently.

I still lack the discipline, the being able to work, and the being compelled to work, for which I have longed for years. Do I lack the strength? Is my will sick? Is it the dream in me that hinders all action? Days go by and sometimes I hear life going. And still nothing has happened, still there is nothing real about me . . . .To which Tolstoy gave a completely unexpected response. With neither sympathy nor pity, he simply said, Write!
Tolstoy could have easily said, bike! At the age of 67, he started teaching himself to ride. Visitors to Yasnaya often commented rather humorously on the sight of the aging anarchist rolling around his estate. Tolstoy was as brief in his response to them as he had been to Rilke.
I feel that I am entitled to my share of lightheartedness and there is nothing wrong with enjoying one's self simply, like a boy.

There are other browsers out there also, two good ones being Opera & Google's new Chrome.
It was because of getting fed up with IE that I too found Firefox, which soon led to going the whole hog with ditching the Windows OS altogether for Linux.
pleasure to find such a good artical! please keep update!! ........................................
There was an indie rock band out of Madison, WI called Rainer Maria that I liked, I didn't know they were named after someone.
Thank you both for your comments/compliments. You may have noticed that I haven't posted in a while. It's due mostly to some recent health issues. I may by down (temporarily) but certainly not out %-{)>
In the meantime, ChrisB should Google old Rainer; there's lots of his Symbolist poetry out there for perusal...
Love that little quote from Tolstoy; great story. You can just imagine the folks criticising the old man wobbling along on his bike! "Does he have no dignity?" Hooray for the triumph over dignity!
Just found the beginning of the quote - he said 'I don't know why I like it, but I keep doing it and am not ashamed'. Legend.
Ever read Robert Bly's translation of Rilke? It's pretty good--at least, the poems read well in English. Can't say how accurate they are as translations. Didn't know Tolstoy was a cyclist--good for him! Thanks.
Nice blog you have. I am a new blogger and because of my love for Santorini (a Greek island) I started my blog, Santorini Greece. Check it out.
Cualquier persona que tenga inclinaciones por el arte ha de disfrutar de la lectura de Rilke.
