Bamboo bike project

getting Ghana rollin!

Despite the critical need for alternative transportation options in Africa, there are no bike-building businesses. All bikes are imported and these are designed for well-paved roads. So they're inappropriate for rural transportation in these regions.

The Bamboo Bike Project is filling that gap. Who would've thought, a bike made mostly out of bamboo? But this plant's stalk is surprisingly very strong and shock-absorbent. Bikes built with bamboo frames allow Africans to use only a few pieces of imported parts, building the rest out of local and native bamboo.

The Bamboo Bike Project is a collaboration between David Ho and John Mutter of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, and Craig Calfee of Calfee Design. The project aims to examine the feasibility of implementing cargo bikes made of bamboo as a sustainable form of transportation in Africa.
