My bike habit?
...Priceless!
Inspired by MasterCard's well known ad campaign, I recently considered the annual costs of my bike habit:
Bike: $75
(I got the Steel Bitch at Working Bikes)
Taxes & Fees: $4.50
(6% to Chicago & Cook County)
Depreciation: $0
(It's a beaterbike!)
Finance & Interest: $0
(I paid cash up front)
Insurance: $0
(I wish!)
Fuel Costs: $0
(or $12K if you factor in food costs)
Maintenance: $200
(Even less if you do it yourself)
Repairs: $100
(I do it myself - so just for scrounged parts)
Funky Gentleman Cyclist Kit: $200
(It pays to roll in style)
Total True Cost to Roll:
$579.50

The only way you can justify factoring in food costs would be if you were planning not to eat unless you were riding. The food will be consumed, anyway. It is possible that you may eat more when riding, but that's a hard one to quantify; spend a week riding the bus while tracking food costs, and compare to a similar week riding? Might be interesting. Val
Good point! Another way would be to calculate calculate calories burned per day. What I came up with is 670.87 total calories burned and 233.47 calories burned solely by riding.
